Qualitative Methods (SSP411)

This course provides a survey of some of the main qualitative methods for conducting empirical sociological research – text analysis, historical comparative research, interviewing, and ethnography. Instead of using “how to” textbooks on each of these methods, we will instead focus on reading and discussing exemplary sociological work in each tradition.  We will then learn by doing—trying out each of these methods for ourselves over the course of the semester and reflecting on the results.
